To celebrate the release of its 50th box set, Trojan Records asked the members of its online forum to suggest some hard to find tracks for a reggae rarities anthology, and the end result is this intriguing three-disc collection that scoots all over the place. Disc one, which covers Jamaican releases from 1966 to 1969, is probably the strongest of the three, yielding gems like the Soul Leaders' laconic "Pour On the Sauce," Gladstone Anderson's "Chances" (culled from the pianist's debut album, 1968's Glad Sounds), and "Worries (A Yard)" by the Versatiles, featuring lead vocals by a young Junior Byles. The second disc covers 1969 to 1973, and includes Boris Gardiner's powerful Hammond B-3 instrumental "Darkness," the Cables' "(Name) Ring a Bell" (with founder Keeble Drummond on lead vocal), and the great Slim Smith covering Billy Stewart's "Sitting in the Park." Disc three concentrates on British releases from 1970 to 1977, and although the U.K. reggae scene is often deemed musically inferior to the Jamaican one, there are some wonderful tracks included here, particularly on the pop side of things, like Tony Nash's orchestrated "Keep On Trying," the Cimarons' "Check Out Yourself," Danny Ray's moving "Just Because," and the Marvels' "Touch Me Baby," which manages to suggest how the Supremes might have sounded had they abandoned Motown for reggae. There are a couple of missteps, like Gene Rondo's ill-advised reggae cover of the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man," but the highs far outweigh the lows throughout the set. True reggae fanatics will treasure this anthology of rarities, while novice listeners may want to check out some of Trojan's other 49 box sets first.

In 1963, the flight from Jamaica to Toronto was 8 hours. Today it's 3 1/2. Countless people have made the dwindling journey over the years, but in the sixties and seventies there was a new breed of traveler: the finest ska, rocksteady, and reggae recording artists the West Indies have ever produced. We're talking Studio One, Treasure Isle, Trojan, and WIRL veterans Jackie Mittoo, Johnnie Osbourne, Wayne McGhie, Lloyd Delpratt, The Mighty Pope, Noel Ellis, Jo-Jo Bennett, and many more. Arriving in their new Canadian home, these talented singers, songwriters, musicians, and performers simply did what came naturally to them. One by one, they hit the studio and captured some of the hardest tunes this side of Kingston. Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk and Reggae 1967-1974, details this crucial sonic migration and stands tall as the second helping of Light In The Attic's new Jamaica to Toronto series, compiled by DJ/Canadian music historian Sipreano, along with Light In The Attic.

Springs in the air...there's magic everywhere....la.la.la.la.....anyone remember that song? Well it is springlike today and I've been out in my garden using the Christmas present which my son bought for me......a Wilkinson Sword Miracle Weeder. Now I don't want to appear ungrateful, but I had hinted long and hard for some Caleche perfume by Hermes so why I got a Miracle Weeder is beyond me, a Miracle Worker I could have understood as I'm in need of it, but a Weeder.....I was somewhat peeved I can tell you. But now I'm feeling the benefit of it. The Miracle Worker ..oops sorry Weeder, is a device to stop people (particularly elderly people, as my son obviously sees me) having to bend and use a trowel. The device is something like a pogo stick, indeed that's what I thought it was at Christmas!! It's about 2/3ft high with a bar ...

May (of 1999) saw another great album out of Studio One when Mr Dodd dusted off his vintage rhythms and invited Jamaican jazz trumpeter Roy "Bubbles" Burrowes to extemporise over them. Keeping Burrowes company on Reggae au go Jazz were US tenor sax players Clifford Jordan and Charles Davis and the entire set amounted to one of the most interesting projects to emerge out of Studio One in recent years, part of a lineage stretching back to those classic 1970s instrumental sets from Cedric Im Brooks and Roland Alphonso.
Another music business mystery - why such a good and relatively recent album would ever be out of print and completely unavailable in any form. Ernest Ranglin on guitar and bass, Jackie Mittoo on the keys, Clifford Jordan on sax, Sir Coxsone Dodd is producing. Can't miss with a lineup like this! Sounds somewhat like Monty Alexander or Ernest Ranglin's solo albums, but more mellow.
