Prince Rogers Nelson, né le 7 juin 1958 à Minneapolis, Minnesota, connu sous le nom d'artiste Prince, est un musicien, chanteur, compositeur, et producteur de funk et de pop américain. Durant les années 1993 à 2000, son nom d'artiste officiel a pris la forme d'un symbole imprononçable1communément appelé Love Symbol. Il s'est illustré depuis la fin des années 1970 comme un musicien multi-instrumentiste souhaitant constamment se démarquer de l'industrie musicale.

Dans les années 1980, Prince est l'une des stars les plus adulées, pouvant compter sur une solide base de fans appréciant ses qualités novatrices et ses dons de musicien. En 1993, il annonce son retrait de l'industrie musicale et prend pour nom un symbole imprononçable. Il édite alors ses disques de façon indépendante et plus confidentielle, et devient beaucoup moins présent sur la scène médiatique. En 2000, son contrat avec Warner-Chappel se termine et il récupère l'usage du nom de Prince. Il renoue parfois avec les maisons de disques, ne signant avec elles que des contrats ponctuels de distribution lui laissant une entière autonomie artistique.

Prince est membre du Rock and Roll Hall of Fame depuis 2004. Il a également reçu en juin 2010 un Lifetime Achievement Award de la chaîne de télévision Afro-Américaine BET.

The Battle of Los Angeles is the third studio album by Rage Against the Machine. It was released on November 2, 1999, and over three years after their second studio album, Evil Empire. Between Evil Empire and Los Angeles, the band released a live album, titled Live & Rare. This album is Rage Against the Machine's most recent album consisting of original material.

The song "Calm Like a Bomb" is featured in the credits of The Matrix Reloaded. The videos to "Sleep Now in the Fire" and "Testify" were directed by documentarian Michael Moore. Both "Testify" and "Guerrilla Radio" are also featured in the video game Rock Band 2, being on-disc and downloadable, respectively.

The album debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 selling 420,000 copies its first week. That week saw a busy CD release schedule. The album denied Mariah Carey's highly anticipated album the chance to open at #1. "Guerrilla Radio" was featured in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, albeit heavily edited on the Nintendo 64 version, and it is also heavily edited on "Madden NFL 10". Both Time and Rolling Stone named it the Best Album of 1999. It was listed as #53 in SPIN Magazine's 100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005.

The album cover art was an original artwork by the LA Street Phantom aka Joey Krebs aka Joel Jaramillo, a well-known Los Angeles artist who has exhibited at numerous galleries in Los Angeles, New York City and throughout the United States.[1] Despite claims to the contrary, the image was not inspired by images from the 1992 street riots of LA or from images of Munich, but by the band's own music and words, and represents one in a series of images of the artist's work, which can also be seen on various street murals in Los Angeles.[citation needed]

The Battle of Los Angeles was heavily influenced by the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. "Testify", "Sleep Now in the Fire", "Voice of the Voiceless", among other songs, include direct quotes from the novel, and mention key Orwellian terms in the lyrics. "Voice of the Voiceless" also contains a quotation from the writings of Mao Tse-tung.

Regarding the album's title it is worth mentioning that there was an historical event called Battle of Los Angeles which took place on February 25, 1942, involving a large-scale anti-aircraft artillery barrage against targets which subsequently remained unidentified.

Saul Williams sampled "Born of a Broken Man" for his song "Om Nia Merican", which appeared on his 2001 album Amethyst Rock Star.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 426 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Funky solo work from Alan Evans of Soulive - a set of tunes that still really keeps the core funky sound of Soulive in place, but which seems to be going for more of a 70s feel overall! Evans sings and plays a bit of keyboards in addition to his usual strong work on drums - and he's working in a core trio with bass and guitar, plus additional guest instrumentation on some tracks, in a range that includes flute, alto, percussion, and Fender Rhodes. There's a stripped-down feel to the record that's totally great - and which is a nice departure from some of the overstated work of Soulive in recent years - a mode that lets Evans get back to the grooves that inspired him, and lay them out perfectly

A very funky, soulful, urban sound that will evoke images of late night lounges in the hippest part of the city. "How Ya Like Me Now" brings on some retro styles and showcases Matt's signature lead sound. Carl Burnett adds his magic touch on production (Larry Carlton, Boney James, etc). Seduction, I Will Be With You, Gas Lamp Groove, Family Funktion all deliver a very chilled out smooth experience that blends R&B and Smooth Jazz. There is also the pleasant surprise "Great Soul." A very unique track that delivers a mix of jazz, hip hop, and Bollywood Indian grooves (produced by Chris Marshak) The guitar style on this tune is reminiscent of John Mayer. There is the emotional "Gratitude" that brings an unforgettable melody. Don't forget about the very funky Uptown that features funkmaster Kenny Harris on bass.

Le funk à la française à proprement parler n’existe peut être pas comme une entité aux contours définis mais il faut avouer que récemment les frenchies se débrouillent plutôt bien dans ce domaine pourtant peu médiatisé. Mr President aka Patchworks fait donc partie de ces fondus de musique Noire qui aiment s’acoquiner avec les réminiscences des 70′s et leur groove addictif. Number One son premier album sous ce pseudonyme est la concrétisation d’un héritage parfaitement transmis .

Everybody’s talking about the good ol’ days

Le phénomène a de quoi intriguer mais on assiste depuis peu à un véritable retour des bands soul-funk. Entre nostalgie et désir d’innovation, la soul-funk s’est entichée de quelques formations orchestrales affutées et nourries au microsillon. Aux Etats-Unis tout d’abord, berceau de la Black Music moderne, la résurgence se traduit par l’apparition de groupes tels que The Revelations, El Michels Affair deux sections rythmiques qui partagent la même admiration pour l’univers soulful du maître RZA. A leur côté, d’autres non moins talentueux revendiquent le même patrimoine musical à l’instar des Expressions, back band de Lee Fields, des Dap Kings, du Budos Band ou encore du Menahan Street Band, chapeautés par les labels Truth & Soul et Daptone Records. En France, si le mouvement n’est pas aussi populaire qu’outre Atlantique, certains musiciens n’ont pas hésité à renouer avec les influences de la Tamla Motown et des années Stax. Souvent issus d’une scène parisienne (mais pas uniquement), ces groupes revisitent la bande son des 70′s afin de retranscrire une fraîcheur communicative à l’image de Push Up, Electrodeluxe ou Sly Johnson. Au sein de ce microcosme, Mr President, connu aussi sous le nom de Patchworks est parvenu à imposer un son référentiel, à la fois pertinent et terriblement expressif.

The Funky President

Au premier abord, Number One aurait pu s’apparenter à un album « tarte à la crème », sans réelle saveur, le genre de projet que l’on écoute d’une oreille distraite en fond sonore. Autant le dire, un scénario cauchemardesque pour tout disque qui se respecte. Heureusement, le résultat est à des lieues de cette stupide appréhension. Mr President aka Patchworks, l’homme qui se cache derrière les projets du Metropolitan jazz Affair et d’Uptown Funk Empire signe ici un opus garni de références musicales qui rappelleront Curtis Mayfield, Fela Kuti, Billy Paul ou le Fatback Band. Un funk tourné vers les genres venant titiller les humeurs afro-beats de « From South To North » avant de fricoter avec la syncope Shaolin du Wu Tang sur « A Tribute To RZA ». Le ton général bénéficie d’arrangements subtils qui confèrent un supplément d’authenticité à ce Number One organique porté par le grain vocal d’Hawa, Mr Day et Mounam. Un choix multipolaire et moderne, évoluant sur une trame funk relevée aux accents soul envoutants (« Homeless Soul ») et une dynamique funk trépidante. Mr President parvient ainsi à proposer un album homogène et captivant sans s’éloigner d’un sujet qu’il maîtrise du début à la fin. Longue vie à lui et à Favorite Recordings !
