Folk, blues et poétique, le style de Mélissa Laveaux allie une guitare acoustique percutante et précise à une voix joliment éraillée qui marie les langues : anglais, français et créole. Née à Montréal en 1985 de parents haïtiens, la miss a grandi à Ottawa, dans un univers anglophone. Menant de front études et concerts, cette guitariste autodidacte réussit en 2007 le grand chelem : diplôme en éthique et société à l'université d'Ottawa, Bourse musicien de la Fondation Lagardère et signature sur le métissé label No Format. Camphor & Copper, son premier disque « officiel », est bâti sur des titres enregistrés pour un album autoproduit paru en 2006. Parmi ces pépites, on tombe aussi sur une reprise d'une chanson d'Elliott Smith. Quant au camphre et au cuivre du titre, la réponse est dans le livret du disque : ces deux substances, bienfaitrices si on les utilise avec parcimonie, se révèlent dangereuses lorsqu'on en abuse. « Comme l'amour », conclut la jeune Canadienne.

The title track, “Passionate Voice”, is a magical song about how our ancestors understood the union and oneness of God and humanity. It is very thought provoking, to be certain. Groupe indépendant de pop-folk baroque, les Fleet Foxes viennent de Seattle.

Le groupe est composé de cinq membres, Robin Pecknold(chant, songwriting), Skyler Skjelset(guitare, mandoline...), Casey Wescott(claviers), Christian Wargo(bassiste) et Nicholas Peterson(batterie), qui jouent tous plusieurs instruments. Robin Pecknold écrit les chansons de Fleet Foxes, au style auto-défini comme de la "confiture pop baroque et harmonique."

Signé sur Sub Pop et Bella Union, ce groupe de doux rêveurs débute sa carrière discographique en février 2008 avec la sortie de l’EP Sun Giant aux USA. Le groupe surprend par un son qui emprunte des aspects très classiques au rock, au folk et même aux chants médiévaux. Le site américain Pitchfork les encense et les personnes les ayant vus sur scène rejoignent son avis. Ne pas se fier à leurs barbes et leur chemises à carreaux qui ne laissent pas transparaître leur musique spirituelle, délicate et lumineuse.

Le premier LP du groupe sort en 2008. Un second album est d’ores et déjà programmé pour 2009, et serait composé de 7 morceaux, long de 25 minutes chacun. Après un passage à la Flèche d'Or au printemps 2008, le groupe revient fin 2008 pour une programmation au festival des Inrocks.

Lauryn Hill bleeds her heart out to everyone through this DVD. She inspires, motivates, and perpetuates inner thought. When watching this performance, one walks out feeling rejuvinated and re-evaluates society and your place in it. Inner demons seemed to haunt Lauryn Hill but obviously overcomes the tragedy of love, life, and forgiveness with oneself. She emates from what is raw and pure emotion which she uses her amazingly- beautiful rapsy voice and her acustic guitar. The music is only secondary as the message is the most thought- provoking passages I have encountered. Her performance of "I Gotta Find A Peace of Mind" is mind- altering, heart- dropping poetry of issues that we all deal with. Towards the end of the song, she cries and pours all her energy so she can get her point accross. The audience is left in tears as well as it is the most incredible sight one can be part of. Please, whether on MTV or through this DVD, just watch it and you will see a strong woman who overcomes everything and still can stand strong in the light of day.

Un deuxième album. Ou l’exercice le plus périlleux pour un artiste en développement, surtout quand le premier a unanimement été salué par la critique (une Victoire de la Musique), comme ce fût le cas pour Yodelice avec Tree Of Life en 2008 et son hit Sunday with a Flu. Autant dire que ce Cardioïd est plus qu’attendu, en premier lieu par les fans.

Le permier single a déjà fait le tour du web. More than meets the eye, dont les premières mesures rappellent d’ailleurs La Fille du Père Noël de Jacques Dutronc, plante le décor. Retour à Spookland, donc, l’univers imaginaire de Yodelice, pour un nouveau voyage psychédélique. L’album s’ouvre par l’annonciateur Breathe In, un titre qui nous indique le caractère plus électrique de l’album et qui évoque une palette d’influences plus large, puisant tantôt dans des ambiances Radioheadiennes et employant tantôt des cordes arabisantes. Un mariage qui n’est d’ailleurs pas sans rappeller No Quarter, l’un des disques-live les plus respectés de Robert Plant et Jimmy Page dans leur période post-Zeppelinienne…

Les échos ne manquent pas dans Cardioïd, ainsi Lady In Black répond musicalement au Weekend Wars de MGMT. Vient ensuite les accords de piano de My Blood Is Burning, un excellent titre, tout en progression, servi par une rythmique implacable et conclu par un solo de guitare très intelligemment placé. Experience est monument de nuances, installant, au piano, des climats tantôt éthérés, tantôt psyché.

Five Thousand Nights renoue avec le caractère plus Folk de Tree Of Life, tandis que Wake Me Up raisonne comme un hymne et arrive à point nommé avant un Picture Perfect annonçant le calme, avant une conclusion de près de 15 minutes :  Monkey’s Evolution. C’est dans ce dernier titre que le voyage se précise, au gré des ambiances et des choeurs. C’est ici également que l’impeccable travail de production d’Olivier Lude (Matthieu Chédid) et de Dave Sardy (Cold War Kids, Red Hot Chili Peppers) se révèle.

Ce Cardioïd est bien plus qu’un essai transformé par Maxim Nucci et sa bande, c’est l’un des albums musicalement les plus riches de cette année 2010. Achetez et écoutez les yeux fermés.
