When it comes to skateboarding and music you could instantly think of bands such as Flogging Molly, Minor Threat and Dropkick Murphys; bands that can easily rile up the listener due to it's punk/hardcore roots. Yet there is the somewhat hidden musical gem of Tommy Guerrero that has brought a more soulful and textured sound to the scene.

A huge skateboarding star in the eighties (As a prominent member of the Bones Brigade), he was well known for his very relaxed style of skating in his hometown of San Francisco and this has carried through into his music. His third album Soul Food Taqueria that broke through to moderate popular success in 2003 (Listed as the second best album of that year by Rolling Stone) showed hints of this chilled out approach yet fast forward eight years to Lifeboats and Follies it has finally been realized to it’s fullest extent and it is a joy to listen to.

From the first track 'Yerba Buena Bump' onwards, TG has set out with laidback stride with the dense and complex interplay between the guitar and trumpet that just immerses you in the music. Once the music has you in it’s grip with the likes of 'The Same Confusion' and 'Hope and Nomadic Static', it never lets go as it’s rich tone that has, so much emotion invested into it, guides the listener through whilst still having the casual drive of the percussion that adds such an infectious groove to the pieces.

The way in which Lifeboats and Follies can effortlessly layer that are incorporates and embraces funk, jazz and hip-hop with an expansive, almost cinematic experience truly is amazing as it moves from the relaxed and rich to the fervent and passionate (such as Ques S’est-il Passe) with such ease. But saying all this, the most impressive thing about Tommy Guerrero and Lifeboats and Follies is the accessibility. You don’t have to be a fan of Latin or soul music to enjoy this music as it has such diversity to it that there will something for almost everyone to like and even if it isn’t exactly what you would usually like, let alone be a fan of, it is guaranteed to hypnotize.

C’est bien en live qu’on déguste Le Peuple de L’Herbe. Dub, électro, hip hop, rock, drum’n’bass, black music, latino, ces concasseurs effrénés de sons, beats et rythmes, se soucient peu des frontières et balancent leurs samples accrocheurs pour faire danser les corps et survolter les esprits. Depuis “Triple Zéro” qui posait les bases de leur musique azimutée inclassable, le collectif lyonnais, toujours aussi radical, n’a pas ralenti le tempo et vient de lâcher sa 5e bombe sonore, “Tilt”, aux propos toujours aussi enragés avec rythmique lourde et vocaux brûlants portés par JC 001 et Sir Jean. Feu !

Over the years Richard Melville Hall has copped a lot of flack from various music circles. To rave aficionados he's the bastard child who betrayed his roots by disputing the genre's relevance. To dance purists he's the sell-out who chased the mighty dollar via multiple advertising deals. To lovers of Deep South Negro spirituals he's the man who whored Alan Lomax field recordings for hits such as Honey, Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? and Run On. And to Eminem, he's eternally the "36-year-old boy in fag clothing".
It's true that he takes himself to seriously and has confusingly mixed morals when it comes to politics, drug use and animal activism, but Moby's 20 years of music making ensures his live shows are a blast. From early dance party successes such as the Twin Peaks-sampling Go to his latest David Bowie-aping single Spiders, on the new DVD Live - Hotel Tour 2005 Moby takes his audience through a diverse range of music styles.
Covering seminal punk, rock and dance tunes such as That's When I Reach For My Revolver, Walk On The Wild Side and Temptation is a risky proposition, but apart from Moby's quivering vocal style the overall package is solid. Moby's female vocalist Laura Dawn makes her mark on hits Find My Baby, Dream About Me and Feeling So Real, with her pint-sized New York boss doing the rock star guitarist thing on We Are All Made Of Stars, Bodyrock and Lift Me Up.
As with previous Moby DVDs, value for money comes via a host of extras, this time including Hotel videos (including the bizarre costume animal wife-swapping debauchery of Beautiful), bonus live tracks, home movies and a remix CD of Moby's latest tracks featuring hot producers Steve Angello, Tiga and Mylo.
Hotel might have been pretty vacant, but Live is a five star stay.

Vous avez été sensible au dernier Asian Dub Foundation? Alors, ce troisième album de Fun'da'mental vous sera absolument essentiel. A la fois plus varié musicalement (on passe d'une pluie d'échantillonnages corsés à la manière d'un Prodigy, mais avec de la substance, à une actualisation de la tradition musicale hindoue) et plus extrémiste dans le propos qu'ADF (on trouve dans le livret une retranscription de la Déclaration des droits de la personne superposée à d'horribles photos d'enfants torturés et assassinés...), Erotic Terrorism est une des missives les plus puissantes à être issues du mouvement Asian underground anglais. Une bombe à retardement.
