High Places est un duo mixte américain dont on avait apprécié le premier album, surfant sur la vague Animal Collective avec une simplicité pop qui s’éloignait des prises de tête conceptuelles. Leur retour ne déclenchait pas une attente hystérique en notre chef je dois bien dire. Un peu à tort parce que la bonne surprise vient d’une vraie pulsation, d’un un rythme indéniable. The Longest Shadows est ainsi immédiatement assimilable, sympathique dès les premières secondes de la première écoute.

On Giving Up est encore meilleur, avec sa basse un peu dark et entêtante, comme une encontre improbable entre Siouxie et Animal Collective dans la grande profondeur d’une piscine. C’est encore une fois le son qui emporte l’adhésion de cette bombe froide qui se place comme un des incontournables de cette année qui s’essouffle un peu. Donc on peut dire ce ces deux premiers morceaux me sont apparus comme d’excellents titres new-wave déviants. Il faudra attendre la mélopée d’On A Hill In A Bed On A Road In A House ou le When It Comes final (qui reprend ce son de ‘guitare’ plein de chorus assez froid) pour que le niveau retrouve les hauteurs des deux premiers morceaux.

Entretemps, cette pulsation aura un peu manqué, ce qui aura rendu cet album passionnant par intermittence seulement. Canada par exemple, s’il ne démérite pas avec sa guitare triturée, ne parvient pas à rester en mémoire. Je vous accorde également que ce n’est pas le sifflotement qui est le but ultime d’une musique pareille. Même si Constant Winter pourrait l’être sans trop de problèmes.

La voix est toujours complétement planquée sous des tonnes d’effets. Haut perchée, elle reste charmante et distanciée, mais sur la longueur, elle semble souvent utiliser les mêmes procédés. Cependant, elle n’est pas présente partout vu que certains titres sont instrumentaux, comme The Channon ou Drift Slayer, drone que viennent relancer des percussions. Comme chez Atlas Sounds, autre adepte du tripatouillage sonore aquatique, ces morceaux valent plus pour leur contribution à l’ambiance générale que pour être écoutés individuellement.

La réserve qu’on puisse avoir sur cet album, c’est que les morceaux qui ont une rythmique plus marquée, un enjeu plus important sont bien plus réussis que les plus contemplatifs. On ne va pas citer ces titres jamais désagréables mais ils participent à une certaine dilution de l’album. C’est sans doute ce qui est l’origine d’une cote relativement basse alors que les quelques coups d’éclat sont assez éblouissants dans leur genre pourtant encombré. Pour sa fraîcheur et le niveau de ses meilleurs titres, on le recommandera à tous les esprits un peu curieux.

Japanese releases are often extortionately expensive and extremely rare in the West. Nik Weston, an infamous collector and promoter of Asian electronic music, has come to the aid of the listening public with this collection. The Soljazz Instrumental of the gorgeously named Gagle’s Practise & Tactix is stylish Jazz-Hop, with a distressed string workout, disjointed rough-and-ready percussion and an overzealous reverbed bass. Osunlade uses a heart-stopping piano, saddened vocals that recognize the truth and fly-away strings to produce a melancholic reinterpretation of UFO’s Listen Love. Calm supplies the emotive De-Tuned Atmosphere which combines an intriguing flute, emphatic beaten percussion, a transporting synth and teary-eyed keys. Ken Ishii’s Awakening is initially a surprising choice, but one listen to the rushing keys, backwards acid keyboard work and hot-footed percussion make everything crystal clear. This is just the tip of a colossal musical iceberg.

The purported story behind the duo FlyKKiller is that these songs were created by an extra terrestrial creature named V, who only wishes to pass peaceful communications to earthlings, yet V is held in captivity at the FlyKiller Institute in Poland. Her captors and keepers (Pati Yang and Stephen Hilton) have taken the recordings and put them out on the market to finance their scientific research. Yang is one of Poland's leading electronic artists (at the tender age of only 18!) and Hilton is known for his collaborations with David Holmes and Siouxsie Sioux's first solo outing, soundtrack work on two James Bond films as well as numerous other motion pictures, and his work behind the boards as producer of recordings by Pulp, Depeche Mode and Sir Trevor Horn. So here are the otherworldly first results of the duo's experiments to date, spurred on by V. They're unlike anything you've yet to hear in this lifetime.
