Sly Johnson, né Silvère Johnson, mais également connu sous le claquant pseudonyme de Sly The Mic Buddah, n’est pas un inconnu. Au sein du Saïan Supa Crew, groupe exemplaire de rap français à la carrière courte mais au succès populaire crossover éprouvé, et ensuite en sideman de luxe auprès de Camille, Erik Truffaz, Rokia Traoré, Oxmo Puccino et quantité d’autres artistes internationaux.

74, son année de naissance, est un premier album soyeux qui s’inscrit dans une veine estampillée nu soul, une étiquette certes rigide, mais qui a le mérite de délimiter le territoire. Un duo avec Ayo, « I’m Calling You », après un « Slaave 2» qui cite le « Slave To The Rythm » de Grace Jones, offre un idéal complément de deux voix, féminine et masculine. « Hey Mama », nettement plus rentre dedans, dans une couleur quasi Staxienne, confirme que le chanteur rappeur de Montrouge (qui ne s’exprime qu’en anglais tout au long de cet album) n’est pas là pour distiller que de la douceur. Les cuivres claquent, la basse bourdonne et la guitare aguiche.

Pour montrer son héritage, il reprend un des plus grands tubes d’Otis Redding, « Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song) », dans une version un peu ralentie, avec une guitare wha wha à la syncope contagieuse. Plus inattendue, sa version de l’unique hit des Korgis, « Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometimes », en 1980, déjà repris récemment par Laurent Voulzy et par JP Verdin sur la B.O. de Lol, semble être ici pour indiquer que l’artiste dépasse le classement urbain auquel il est prédestiné, même si sa version, très soul slow à la Billy Paul, s’affranchit des autres tentatives constatées. 74, avec son parti pris rétro, seventies, au plus près de l’essence de cette musique, est une réussite dans sa réalisation, sa musicalité, et son interprétation.

Sly, après des années dans le métier, veut décoller l’étiquette de rappeur que son parcours lui a collée aux épaules. Mais on aurait aimé se laisser séduire par quelques chansons en français, qui auraient formé nouveauté dans cette couleur. Là, il se met sur les rangs des collègues anglo-saxons, et du même coup se complique la vie dans son territoire d’élection, au moment où un jeune cousin joue les oncles affranchis.

This is an intriguing set. Although put out by the Concord subsidiary Peak, the jazz content is pretty low, with the flavor of jazz utilized much more than any serious improvising. However, the dance music is continuous and episodic, and keeps one guessing. A lot of different colors are used (whether it be Louis Van Taylor's tenor, Karen Briggs or Trey Duncan on violins, the keyboards, or the occasional vocalists), plenty of moods are covered, and the grooves never stop. Its main fault is that the electronic rhythms do not vary often enough (do dancers really need to have the beat stated so obviously all the time?), but in general this is a more interesting set than expected. It works best as background party and dance music.

Voici une nouvelle production Daptone, celle-ci était plutôt attendue. Après leur ep de 2009, Le Budos Band nous propose donc le troisième album du combo avec ce "III" qui suit les remarquables "I" et "II". On pourrait commencer à se dire que Thomas Brenneck et sa bande de musiciens commencent à nous sortir par les oreilles avec leur formule afro-soul-funk et pourtant c'est encore une fois une petite bombe qu'ils nous lâchent. La formule n'a pas changé, les protégés de Brenneck brassent un bon paquet de références passant par l' Éthiopie, le rock et des ambiances parfois plus psychédéliques. Le tout avec un sens du groove quasi naturel. Percussions, claviers et cuivres enflammés s'en donnent à cœur joie sur des mélodies entêtantes. Alors difficile de ne pas saluer une belle mécanique comme celle-ci, "Rite of the ancients", "Unbroken, unshaven" ou "Mark of the unnamed" ont tout pour devenir de vrais classiques. Pas de panne d'inspiration donc et grande maîtrise pour ce talentueux combo. Ce "III" est au final fortement recommandable pour la deuxième partie de saison.

Twenty-year-old singer Rachel Scharnberg, obviously anything but a sixties kid, presents herself as an artist deeply influenced by original soul and funk music from way back, by the warm and intense performances that made us admire Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway, the sound being kept alive by the likes of Daptone Records today. “Plain & Simple” is all about pure, hand made music. No samples, no gadgets, nothing but vintage instruments, an amazing voice and analogue recording gear. In case you ever wondered what makes vinyl records and analogue techniques so special – this is a perfect demonstration of the raw, uncut sound of Soul.


Equally vital to this album as Rachel is, there’s Soul Criminals trombinist and bandleader Michael Theissing-Tegeler (MTT) with his compositions and his unique way of producing. A few years back, he teamed up with The Shack Band and delivered “Geb’s auf” (“Give it up”), a funky gem embraced by DJs, vinyl collectors and soul lovers alike, and now he finally returned to recording. Tegeler draws his inspiration from Daptone mastermind Gabriel Roth’s manifesto “shitty is pretty”, a guide to analogue recording techniques aiming at the intense sound that only a reel-to-reel tape recorder is able to capture. Unpretentious yet sophisticated, Rachel, MTT and the Soul Criminals are on top of their game, young musicians who have spent half their lives on stage and have worked with German greats as diverse as Curse, Tom Gaebel, Sarah Connor, Brings, Stefanie Heinzmann, Denyo or Luis.


This record is driven by honest devotion to music. Music that touches you, makes you want to dance – music that simply feels good. The Soul Criminals are based in Cologne’s Parkhaus-Studio, which itself is widely renowned for distinct, unconventional productions. Soulplex Recordings and online radio station soulsender.de, both highly respected players not only in Cologne’s music scene, have teamed up with Rachel and the Soul Criminals in order to spread the word: It’s “Plain & Simple!”
