kimono and Bad Taste Ltd. are very pleased to announce that the new album, Arctic Death Ship, has finally arrived in the country of Iceland. Advance reviews have called the album "an ambitious, bold, brilliant piece of modern rock, cramming the last twenty or so years of musical genre bending into one complete whole." We like to think of it as the sound of four drastically different individuals pulling songs in many directions at once.

ADS was recorded by Aron Arnarsson and kimono in Studio Tími (klinK+Bank). It was mastered by Mike Marsh at The Exchange in London. The artwork features drawings by Giancarlo Bracchi and layout design by Alex and Dóri from kimono. Guests include members of Ghostigital, Hudson Wayne, the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, and the Reagan administration.

The title of the album comes from the second of seven woodcuts by HC Westermann (U.S., 1922-81) from a series he named The Connecticut Ballroom (1975-76). This series addressed a range of "heady themes - the likes of death, love, and the American Dream." Like the series, the album describes a foreboding atmosphere partially alleviated by a dose of humour and deflective surrealism. Starting off with a lullaby about individualist isolation and the American hegemony, the album goes through a near-catastrophe in a family from several angles before ending on a walk through the woods (echoing "Tea Can Forest" from kimono's first album mineur-aggressif). So there.

Thanks to everyone who helped us out over the past few years with putting on shows and sending us those nice letters of encouragement. We're moving to Germany this fall to play shows and work on new material. We'll be trying to tour as much as possible so anyone with contacts around the continent or ideas for venues, definitely contact us about setting up shows.

Pour une bonne idée, c'est une bonne idée ! Aerosmith qui revisite les grands classiques du blues, ça a tout pour plaire et quand en plus c'est réalisé avec talent et sérieux, ça nous donne un très bon album !

Le groupe reprend de grands classiques : "Road Runner" de Bo Diddly, "Broke Down Engine" de Blind Willie McTell, "Temperature" de Little Walter ou encore "I'm Ready" de Willie Dixon & Muddy Waters.

Dans cet album, il n'y a donc qu'une chanson inédite écrite par Aerosmith : "The Grind". C'est évidemment là où on retrouve le plus le groupe, dans la grande tradition des bijoux romantiques de Aerosmith à mettre au rang d'un "cryin'", d'un "crazy" ou même d'un "I don't want to miss a thing", superbe, douce et en même temps pimentée par la guitare de Joe Perry.

Les fans de blues en auront vraiment plein les oreilles; à leur façon le groupe interprète de manière magistrale le blues. Ce qui peut paraître pour un disque à vocation commercial se révèle en fait un vrai coup de coeur, sûrement une volonté du groupe, un rêve qu'ils ont voulu accomplir de revisiter leurs références autrement que sur un bout de table lors d'une soirée entre amis.

Le mélange est des plus réussi, ça swingue, ça donne envie de bouger, les morceaux sont bien choisis, la voix éraillé de Steven Tyler excelle dans ce registre. Il montre que le blues n'est pas réservé aux voix de chanteurs noirs : un blanc bec du rock'n roll peut très bien se révéler aussi bons qu'eux dans ce registre. On retrouve ce qui fait la grandeur du blues, des rythmes entrainants, un piano toujours très frénétique, des cuivres, de l'harmonica, l'ambiance est réussi admirablement. Cela ne les empêche pas de donner leur touch' à chaque morceau avec quelques excès électriques caractéristiques du groupe.

C'est un retour aux sources, quoi de plus sécurisant après un album pas très très bon Just Push and Play que de se planquer dans un registre qui les conforte et leur fait regagner confiance. C'est sûr que le défi à relever n'est pas énorme. Quoique .... il fallait quand même que ces reprises ne sonnent pas moins bien que leurs références pour ne pas paraître inutile. Ils ont réussi leur pari en donnant une nouvelle couleur à tout ces morceaux blues, la couleur Aerosmith et c'est donc un album à posséder pour tout fan d'Aerosmith mais aussi pour tout amateur de blues qui ne verra sûrement pas une aussi bonne production sortir cette année.
En fait si ... l'amateur de blues a de la chance cette année, 2004 s'annonce très blues puisque pour concurrencer Honkin' On Bobo (volontairement ou pas), Eric Clapton sort lui aussi un très bon album : Me And Mr Johnson.

"Blues Theme" is arguably the most famous track by Davie Allan & the Arrows. It was recorded quickly on Mike Curb's Tower label for the soundtrack to the move Wild Angels -- Peter Fonda's first biker flick and just before Easy Rider. With wild, screaming fuzz guitar and a surf beat, it signifies the sound of the L.A. Strip in 1967 and embodies -- in its two-minutes-and-ten-seconds -- all the cultural elements of its soundtrack -- the waning surf scene that traveled it, the muscle cars that roared through its lanes, the dawn of acid-crazed hippies floating down it, and the speed-drenched outlaw biker tribes who haunted it. The rest of the album is a literal pastiche of tracks that were issued under other names, slightly doctored for and from other soundtracks -- there were seven between the Arrows' first album, Apache '65, and Blues Theme -- or simply renamed. These include "King Fuzz," an instrumental remake of "The Twirl" by Harley Hatcher; "Theme From the Unknown," which had several names in earlier releases on 45 rpm's, and "Fuzz Theme," that was later re-titled "The Young World," for the soundtrack to Teen Rebellion. The CD reissue contains the album's original ten cuts, plus three bonus tracks, all of which are previously unissued -- with a smoking read of Del Shannon's "Runaway." The set is brief, but it is all killer, no filler. Sundazed does it again.
