• Jazz Mafia is giving away 10 tracks to celebrate The Shotgun Wedding Quintet's 2009 debut at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The Shotgun Wedding Quintet creates an illicit blend of hip-hop and jazz that’s rooted in tradition. The 5-piece ensemble creates a sound that is equal parts big-band and boom-bap, paying homage to the art of improvisation both lyrically and instrumentally. Brass, Bows & Beats seamlessly combines Latin polyrhythms, boom-bap rhymes, melancholy ballads, swinging jazz and blistering solos, while at the same time adhering to symphonic structural elements. All spun together in the spirit of a Jazz Era big band- but conducted with a maestro’s sense of timing, timbre, and mood- the experience is akin to watching the New York Philharmonic back a street corner B-Boy battle in the heart of downtown Oakland. Realistic Orchestra's instrumentation is based on a century old classic ensemble known as the “Big Band” or “Jazz Orchestra” which includes 13 horns and a rhythm section of drums, upright bass and keyboards. Adding to this foundation is guitar, electric bass, electonics, guest DJs, and guest vocalists. These elements, combined with modern electronic influenced grooves, epic arrangements and cutting:edge jazz improvisation, create the distinct and unmistakeable sound of the Realistic Orchestra. Spaceheater’s Blast Furnace is a rhythmically active six piece ensemble that presents melodic and tight horns over an organic patchwork of afro-latin and hip-hop rhythms. Cannonball, founded in early 1997, is one of the earliest threads of what is now known as the Jazz Mafia. The band found a niche performing repertoire inspired directly by the groove-based music of the Julian “Cannonball” Adderley’s Quintet from the 60s and 70s.
