Apparently fans aren't the only ones getting tired of waiting for Sade to release another album: her band -keyboardist Andrew Hale, bassist Paul Denman, and guitar/sax man Stuart Matthewman, collectively redubbed Sweetback- decides to burn a little creative energy between Miss Adu's efforts, and the result is far more satisfying than you might expect. Instead of merely being an instrumental Sade record, "Sweetback" is an exciting foray into a world where lounge meets electronica, ending up in places a Sade record will never take you.

Of course, the boys are quite used to backing a singer, so there's no shortage of vocals onhand. Groove Theory alum Amel Larrieux lends some sexy, wordless vocals to the groovy etherealism of "Gaze," and offers a self-help lyric to "You Will Rise." Leroy Osbourne, frequent background vocalist for Sade (most notably on "Never as Good as the First Time" and "Nothing Can Come Between Us") makes the most of his time in the spotlight here on a stunning rendition of Bill Withers' "Hope She'll Be Happier," while rapper Bahamadia lays down a smooth spoken-word vibe on "Au Natural." And since Sweetback played a significant part of soul master Maxwell's debut, it's only natural he should lend a hand on the silky "Softly Softly," a song he co-wrote with Mathewman and offers the best elements of both Sweetback's and Maxwell's music.

But luckily, Sweetback doesn't need a mouthpiece to shine. "Sensations" is a smooth retro number with a gently percolating beat, and "Arabesque" is all down-and-dirty seduction; the muffled, sampled beat paired with heavy guitars is sexy as hell, and "Arabic synth" (as is credited, anyway) adds a unique twist. "Walk of Ju" mesmerizes between its sultry sax and World Music overtones, while "Come Dubbing" offers a atmospheric cross between World Music and Trance at a mellow tempo.

In fact, only the last two numbers -"Cloud People" and "Powder"- are unnecessary exercises, plodding along with minimum melody and treading dangerously close to the realm of New Age wallpaper. But the bulk of this record is as exciting and innovative as the band's missing singer, and Sweetback proves they have enough atmosphere and style to last them between Sade releases...and considering her recording timeline thus far, that's a good thing.

While Kosheen took drum'n'bass to the mainstream club and Pendulum twisted it into something approaching fist-pumping, arena rock, Ror-Shak want to become the Zero 7 or Röyksopp of drum'n'bass. Members DJ DB and Shaun Morris bring the genre into the lounge on their debut album, Deep, a laid-back and often spacy effort that works best in the background thanks to some cringe-worthy words. Luckily, these producers have great taste in vocalists with Naked Music veteran Lisa Shaw supplying the soul while David Lynch's muse Julee Cruise supplies the previously mentioned spaciness. Morningwood frontwoman Chantal Claret does an excellent job on this slowly building cover of the Cure's "A Forest," but it's the lesser known Wendy Starland who comes in first with her jazzy, Billie Holiday inspired voice gracing two cuts. Ror-Shak's rich, warm soundscapes and their infectious drum'n'bass rhythms would be just as listenable as instrumentals, so even with all the beautiful voices, Deep would be better off stripped of some hippy, trippy, and trite words.

Another sunny Monday in London (a rare occurence of late) but before I head out to London Fields for a boozy afternoon of fun and frolics, I thought I better give you a quick heads up on a little album that’s been released today. After just over two years since his debut 12″, the epic dancefloor tune, “You Will Save Me” arrived on the ever consistent Wah Wah 45s label, Scrimshire delivers his first album for the label entitled “Along Came The Devil One Night”, available from all good music stores now on both CD and MP3. Although it seems that its taken a bit of time for the album to see the light of day, personally I, and a few other people I know who’ve already heard it, believe that it’s definitely been worth the wait. Having delved into the LP over repeated listens during the past few weeks, I think Mr Adam Scrimshire has probably completed one of the first essential UK soul albums of 2009. That may be a bit of a grand statement for a Monday afternoon in May and especially from someone who has had the pleasure of knowing him for a year or two, but casting all that aside and just slipping “Along Came The Devil One Night” in your music player should at least confirm that you are indeed listening to something a little bit special. Clocking in at just over 43 minutes long and after numerous revisions, three previous vinyl releases (all holding exclusive non album cuts, versions and remixes – The King Knut remix of “Mistaken” being a personal highlight – go seek) and a host of live shows, Scrimshire delivers a succint album incorporating a range of styles from jazz to soul, folk to funk, and pulls it all together to produce a work of sheer cinematic brilliance. From the opening piano intro of “The Low Road” through the subsequent tracks “People We Spoke To” and the title track (probably the strongest three track opening that I’ve heard on an album recently), right through to closing track “I Have Come To You”, a melancholic duet with label mate Stac, everything fits together nicely, without any unnecessary skits or filler cuts. Just a solid nine tracks of soulful, uplifting, contemporary music. Scrimshire, who produces and plays a range of instruments on the album, is joined by a talented bunch of musicians and singers, including Jake Telford (OK_Ma) on sax and flute, vocals from Inga-Lil Aker, Rob Hynd, Claire Lauren (the voice on the standout jazz track “Springtime”) and Stac, plus guest strings from The Middlewood Sessions. But don’t just take our word for it, cop the tracklist and check the MP3 snippets below to check out all the tracks in their full unabounded (but edited) glory and then hop on over to Scrimshire’s website to catch the man in his own words.

Alexey Nikitin aka Nocow – electronic musician from St.-Petersburg. It is difficult to classify his music as a particular style, because he stay-on-a-way of experiment, never knowing where his music will take him next. It gives a notion about state of his mind and, sometimes, it falls you in pleasant thoughts. The artist’s first EP was released at the beginning of 2008 by “DedPop” internet label. At the same time he started to work as participant of “Wax Paper Cup”.
