Si le nom Port-Royal ne vous évoque rien en matière musicale, il serait urgent d’y remédier. Impératif même. Après deux opus et un album de remixes, le groupe italien sortait il y a quelques jours Dying in time, son nouveau bijou de musique électronique.

Habilement nichée entre l’ambient, le shoegaze, l’électronica et le post-rock, la musique de Port-Royal fait rêver. Les nappes synthétiques, omniprésentes sur tous leurs albums, enveloppent la romance comme une douce couverture de coton. Volatiles, légères, les notes de guitare illuminent les mélodies célestes empruntées à un monde imaginaire.

Sans être triste, la musique de Port-Royal invite à la mélancolie, au rêve. La fluidité des transitions y est pour beaucoup. Jamais le quatuor ne brusque ses voyageurs, amenant chaque changement avec délicatesse. Dying in Time poursuit cette odyssée et fait même plusieurs fois escale en terre click n’cuts. A commencer par Hva (Failed revolution), qui rappelle sans complexe Telefon Tel Aviv.

Mais Port-Royal a surtout renforcé ses destinations ambient, comme sur le sublime Exhausted Muse/Europe. Plus nappé qu’un mudcake au chocolat, Dying in Time ne reste pourtant pas figé. Chaque morceau évolue à sa manière, pour parfois terminer sur un beat techno puissant (l’énorme Bolding Generation) et même flirter avec la pop sur Photoshoped Prince. Nights in Kiev se rapproche beaucoup d’Anya: Sehnsucht présent sur Afraid to Dance, pour replonger l’auditeur dans des sonorités connues.

La conclusion des trois Hermitage est tout aussi belle et mélancolique, la part 3 fermant en apothéose par un post-rock impalpable. Soulignons également l’artwork sublime en couverture de l’album, qui embrasse à merveille la musique des Italiens.

Dying in time est un chef d’œuvre à se procurer, à écouter, à méditer, à partager, à inclure dans sa sexlist pour quiconque en possède une. Les génies transalpins ont encore frappé fort, sans que l’on sache réellement où ils s’arrêteront. L’admiration que je porte pour Port-Royal n’est pas mesurable. A l’image de leur musique. Je vous aime.

Outer Dark displays Bill Laswell's penchant for working out compositional ideas at great length, breaking the 20-minute barrier on both of the album's instrumental pieces. Entirely a studio creation, the music is the result of Laswell's (sounds) collaboration with Robert Musso (engineering, treatments) at Brooklyn, NY's Greenpoint Studios. The duo attempts to shape a composition out of the dark ether on the opening "Chakra." It begins with a buzzing sitar drone (providing the Eastern flavor common in Laswell's music) and strummed guitar emerging from the murk. Disappearing and returning throughout, the elements take on a sort of dizzying paranoia at song's end through their repetition. As for the ether itself, the musical backdrop is a drift of throbbing, amorphous ambience comprised of mildly chilling keyboard washes and tube-like breezes. It's intriguing as atmosphere, but little else. "Ananta (Passing Dream)" is more interesting if only because of its rhythm element. The compositional approach is roughly the same as a buzzing, wiry beat spends a good deal of the track trying to find a point of entry in a similar setting. Released on Germany's Fax label, Outer Dark is like the sound of the universe's pulsations: music for the formation of heavenly bodies. Unconcerned with conventional development, it's forced to find a source of power amidst the ambience. While the explorations contain enough substance for Laswell's serious fans, the music ultimately lacks the sort of muscle inherent in his best work.

Richard Bailey ou encore Proem est déjà une sacrée pointure dans la mouvance des musiques électroniques. La trentaine, il est l’auteur d’une bonne flopée d’albums  depuis 1999 qui ont fait de lui une référence en matière d’IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). Enough Conflict ne déroge pas aux précédentes recettes qui ont fait le succès et la reconnaissance du jeune homme. On se laisse submerger  par des boucles sonores percutantes et des samples hétéroclites toujours bien agencés. Proem crée des atmosphères électro-poétiques où l’on retrouve aussi bien du “à l’ancienne” au gré de rythmiques connues (type valse) ou l’utilisation d’instruments classiques (piano) mais aussi du totalement futuriste avec bidouillages bruitistes et électroniques.  Boîte à berceuses modernes pour grands enfants, Enough Conflict peut plaire tout autant aux fans hardcores qu’aux nouveaux venus sur la planète Proem.

Broken Soul Jamboree - Album Revue by tippermusic

Un fond sous-marin, des champignons, des cristaux, du lichen, un robot, un satellite et l’espace en arrière-plan : la pochette du dernier album du britannique Tipper est laide mais possède le mérite d’intriguer. Que se cache-t-il alors derrière ce visuel au bon goût peu évident ? Un revival trance psyché ? Une avalanche de basses assommantes lorgnant du côté de la dub ? En fait non, Broken Soul Jamboree est juste un disque où se croisent electronica et réflexions ambient. Organiques et oniriques, apaisantes mais jamais calmes, les créations de ce compositeur-producteur niché depuis une décennie dans l’underground résonnent et s’emparent de la pièce une fois la lecture lancée. Les tracks se suivent, le plaisir s’installe et l’on ne sort finalement de la bulle qu’une fois la treizième et dernière piste achevée. Maitrisé et pouvant être autant apprécié par le rendu de ses atmosphères que par les multiples soubresauts qui tapissent ces doux abîmes, Broken Soul Jamboree fait parti de ces disques surprises qui n’auront pas de mal à trouve un public, encore moins si celui-ci a l’âme vagabonde. Petit conseil pour finir : écoutez-le d’une traite, l’expérience n’en sera que meilleure.

Their name inspired by the weed section of the botanical gardens in Geneva and the undeniable power of hemp, Dan and Cristina are WEED.

Dan was born in Bucharest, Romania. He began violin and classical music training at an early age.
Even earlier he began a lifelong fascination with tape machines and tapes fed in backwards, the distant transmissions of Radio Free Europe coming through distorted frequencies and the phasing effects one can create by playing with a short wave receptor.

Cristina, a free spirited artist and poet is from the same district of Bucharest as Dan but the two never met until their families fled communist Romania.

Granted a scholarship to study at the Conservatoire de Geneve at only sixteen,Dan sought music everywhere, spending time in record shops, meeting djs who soon led him into clubs. Earning a set of Technics djing at the landmark Club 58 on the resident's days off and soon after dropping out of musical studies and college to work odd jobs in order to acquire a Korg synthesiser and a Roland beat box, Dan was on his way to making reality out of the dream of composing and producing electronic music.

Having met Dan on a spanish holiday, Cristina began experimenting with music herself after having discovered the likes of Vangelis, Syd Barett,Can, Kate Bush.
Blessed with a distinctive voice and a passion for painting, making collages and macro photography, she also became the live vocal sample provider for Dan's musical projects.

Having relocated to Canada, they quickly became known among a new electronic music community that had grown in early nineties Vancouver, launching the Outersanctum label connected more with Detroit and german techno, ambient, acid house, than the industrial sounds this city is more readily associated with.
The first compilation "Frequencies from the edge of the tektonic plate" with its ambient acid feel puts Vancouver on this planet's electronic music map.

A string of releases followed, some released through their own label, others licensed to established names like Harthouse, The All Blacks, Apollon, Silent, Interchill, Pork,
Chrysalis, WaxTrax, and EMI .
In 1999 the two return to native Romania for a visit and decide to settle in a mountain village where life is as it was two hundred years [or more] ago.
Horse drawn carriages, wooden stoves, secular traditions and lots of fresh air.

Floating between shamanic pop and space-a-delic lust " Visionary Sessions" is pure electromantic therapy.
