Revenir sur la vraie identité de Blundetto n’a finalement que peu d’intérêt, les infos sont aisément trouvables un peu partout. Se pencher sur ce premier album l’est nettement plus.
Car pour reprendre le mutli-samplé Nautilus de Bob James, il faut être soit inconscient soit en avoir dans le froc comme on dit dans les films de mafia. Tirant son a.k.a. de la série The Soprano, on peut parier que Blundetto entre dans la 2ème catégorie. Pas Parrain pour 2 ronds, Blund est du genre à pourtant bien s’entourer (Chico Mann, Shawn Lee, Budos Band Horns…) avec pour inspiration principale sa collection de disques qu’on imagine bien garnie. Car le spectre de ces Bad Bad Things est du genre à balayer large. Flirter avec des volutes enfumées de reggae, s’enivrer de Soul nostalgique, faire péter un écrasant soleil latino, laisser pointer des ambiances de bandes originales, ou lâcher les chevaux sur le bien nommé Mustang, tout ça Blund sait le faire. Et ce en moins de 4 minutes dans des morceaux qui sont autant de vignettes musicales différentes aux arrangements détaillés, reflets d’un (super) travail de production effectué en duo avec Blackjoy.
Bad Bad Things est bien la bonne surprise de ces derniers mois et Blundetto n’en est qu’à ses débuts.

Chez madmoiZelle.com, on a une philosophie : ce n’est pas parce qu’on est des jeunes filles qu’on est cruches. N’empêche que quand j’ai vu le titre du nouveau CD de Sergent Garcia, Mascaras, je n’ai pas pu faire autrement que de me dire "chouette, un disque de musique pas girly qui a un titre de produit de beauté, c’est la classe !". En fait, rien à voir, ça veut juste dire "Masques" en espagnol, et ça correspond d’ailleurs nettement mieux à la musique qu’on y trouve que ma première interprétation.

Le premier titre "Dulce con chili" préfigure le reste du disque, qui est dans son ensemble une petite douceur qui cache bien son côté pimenté par les mélanges subtils et originaux dont Sergent Garcia a fait sa marque de fabrique depuis qu’il a inventé la salsa muffin.

Fidèle à cette tradition du cocktail musical, Mascaras est donc un mélange détonant de tout ce que les oreilles de Sergent Garcia ont pu grapiller à gauche et à droite dans toutes les grandes villes visitées durant sa précédente tournée, avec l’ambition de faire émerger un concentré de la musique urbaine entendue aux quatre coins du globe.

Les 12 titres de l’album ont chacun un style bien à eux, né d’un mix de reggae et de rap ("Toi tu es là bas"), de reggaeton et de mambo ("Pintame"), de pur reggae ("Les cinq sens du guerrier") et plein d’autres choses encore. Il y en a donc un peu pour tous les goûts : des paroles en français, en anglais et en espagnol ; du tendre, du dynamisant et de l’engagé…

Finalement, le seul reproche que l’on puisse faire à cet album, qui n’est en réalité que le revers de la médaille de sa qualité, c’est d’être assez peu accessible pour les oreilles novices. A moins d’accepter, sans en apprécier nécessairement toutes les subtilités, de se laisser tout simplement emporter par ses rythmes explosifs !

Currulao, chirímia et aguabajo ? Plus besoin d’être ethnomusicologue pour s’initier aux rythmes et sonorités traditionnels de la côte Pacifique colombienne. Une région enclavée, connue comme la « petite Afrique » de Colombie, dont Choc Quib Town s’est fait le porte-parole, puisant dans son folklore pour produire une fusion musclée de hip-hop, dancehall et de funk-pop latino. Outre son caractère éminemment festif, la formule doit son succès aux messages positifs véhiculés par la charismatique chanteuse Goyo et les MC Tostao et Slow, qui épinglent les problèmes sociaux (« De Dónde Vengo Yo »), ethniques (« Oro ») et écologiques (« Pescao Envenenao ») qui, au-delà d’une région (« Somos Pacifico »), touchent le pays tout entier. Consacré sur le plan national et fort bien reçu aux Etats-Unis, Choc Quib Town débarque en Europe avec un disque sous forme de best-of de ses deux premières productions, avant une tournée estivale qui sera l’occasion de mesurer la formidable énergie communicative du trio.

Noa (de son vrai nom Achinoam Nini), auteur-compositeur israélienne, a été révélée en France lors de la sortie de son album éponyme, en 1994. Elle y interprétait, entre autres, un Ave Maria chaud et envoutant, ou encore Wildflower.

Le grand public français a surtout pu découvrir Noa à l’occasion de la sortie de la comédie musicale Notre-Dame de Paris.

Noa n’a pas souhaité faire la tournée, mais elle interprétait, sur l’album, le rôle d’Esméralda, et nous a par exemple offert cet Ave Maria Paien (textes de Richard Cocciante sur une musique de Luc Plamandon),

Chanteuse engagée pour la paix, Noa veut bousculer les frontières, et elle participe à des concerts caritatifs dans le monde entier.

Cependant, six ans après son dernier enregistrement, c’est avec un album plus personnel que Noa revient dans les bacs. Elle le définit comme le voyage de toute sa famille, partie du Yémen pour s’installer en Israël, avant d’aller vivre aux Etats-Unis. Elle-même a grandi à New-York, avant de repartir vivre en Israël.

Comme un hommage d’une jeune femme (Jeans) à sa grand-mère (Gènes), Noa chante dans cet album le mélange des cultures, tantôt en anglais, en hébreu ou en yémenite.

One tendency I've found among musicians is that worldly artists tend to be pretty good at making worldly music. Vocalist and songstress Somi certainly qualifies. Born in middle-American Illinois but to immigrants from the East African nations of Rwanda and Uganda, Somi spent part of her childhood in Zambia. She studied the cello through much of her life, until she was inspired by her mother to take up singing. Eventually, she molded her own emblem on music; that sound of hers is a perfect blend of American jazz and soul with East African hues and rhythms. Somi calls it "New African Soul." This multicultural approach has been honed over two albums and as of October 13, Somi has a third album that's perhaps her most personal one yet, entitled If The Rains Come First.

If "New African Soul" sounds just a tad like Michael Olatuja's Speak album written about here earlier this year, well, Olatuja is very much involved on this album, too: he contributes his electric and acoustic bass playing deftness on every track, as well as producing this record along with Michele Locatelli. Having recorded this disc last spring in Paris, they were able to pull in a rhythm section from the city's vibrant local African music scene. By using musicians who instinctively understand Somi's delicate vision, Olatuja and Locatelli gives the sonic palette some depth and it's smooth as the surface of a bayou, but tastefully avoids trends of the day. It embraces the ears with the comforting sounds of acoustic guitars, gurgling electric piano and genuine African percussion. Most importantly, they allow Somi's voice, songs and musical conception come fully to life.

Somi's lithe voice carries the elegant moodiness of Nina Simone and the smokey allure of Sade. Even though Somi sings in three different East African languages as well as English, you don't even notice she's giving us linguistic change-ups because the universal language of music stays out front. She doesn't attempt to knock you over with a broad range (although as "Maybe Then" shows us, she has little difficulties hitting the upper register), nor does she over-emote, a trap too many soul singers fall into. She takes the songwriter's approach of rendering her lyrics in service of the melody.

Somi wrote the lyrics for all eleven tracks and created those melodies with some help from the producers and the other backing musicians. Though Somi doesn't play any instruments on this record, she clearly understands enough about music theory from all her years studying classical music to put together some subtle, elaborate melodies that are consistently sweet-sounding. Take, for instance, the opener "Hot Blue," which grooves along gently on a circular African rhythm but concludes with a more assertive bridge where Somi provides a lead vocal counterpoint in English to background vocals sung in one of those African tongues. Her lyrics are consistently introspective, dealing with issues of spirituality and confronting life's challenges while relishing its blessings.

The contemporary Brazilian vocal backing on "Rising" combine with African beats and jazz guitar to create a breezy three-way connection among Africa, South America and North America." Other notable touches are the tight, soothing East African grooves and airy vocals found on the title tune, the gentle piano tribute to Somi's father "Jewel Of His Soul, and the way the jazzy melody just floats above rapid percussion rumbling underneath on "Kuzunguka." Somi even supplies some effective oral percussion on the acoustic guitar based "Changing Inspiration" (see video of live version below).

The track being promoted most heavily is "Enganjyani," which means "most beloved" in the Rutooro language. Hugh Masekela guest appearance may have much to do with the hoopla on this track, but even the famed South African trumpeter takes a backseat to Somi's flair for easy flowing melodic lines and naturally heartfelt vocal stylings.

Somi came up with the heading If The Rains Come First from her mother, who told her that rains can bring blessings as much as they offer challenges. Somi took the challenge of putting together a well conceived and carried-out record of African soul and the result is a blessing for those who appreciate such a intelligent and mellifluous mixture of sounds spanning oceans.

If The Rains Come First comes to us via ObliqueSound Records, the label co-founded by Locatelli and an outfit that thus far seems to have a good eye for finding and recording those worldly musicians who make quality world music.
