There aren't enough natural resources on planet Earth to keep us going. And there are insufficient amounts of love, hospitality or, indeed, humane warmth. That's all a given. But what is not lacking in any way, shape or form on our madly spinning orb, is - instrumental hip hop.

Not that this bothers Fat Jon. Beat creator for Cincinnati based hip hop outfit Five Deez crew and sometime collaborator with German dubmeister Pole, Jon has carved a nice little side niche for himself as a purveyor of, yup, the genre that has expanded exponentially ever since DJ Shadow showed the world how complete an instrument a sampler could be in the right hands.

Do we really need more?

Jon showed us back in 2002, on his album Wave Motion, that an ostensibly vocal-less album could speak volumes. He showed us how basslines could moil and mutter seductively, how jazz riffs could burble magnificently, and how cleverly placed samples and skilful arrangements could trick us into thinking these instrumentals were actually songs.

Lightweight Heavy does the same again, conjuring up a certain sound ­summed up neatly in the title ­that balances butch, punchy riddims with summery vibes and simple structures that seem multi-dimensional.

The first single, "Everywhere" is a case in point. A tripping, folkish vocalstitched to a coruscating harmony produces an endlessly pleasant bump that has simplicity written all over it, but is still hopelessly infectious.

Opening gambit from the album, "Talk To Me", is pure pillow-talk; breathy vocal samples rising up from a deceptively brisk beat ride a classical piano riff that pushes your thoughts towards an abstract horizon.

Trademark dubby basslines are a big reason for Jon's allure. "Torn Again" and "Mystery Soul" tug directly at the knees, compensating for the overall lack in rhythm shifts and chord changes.

"Synopsis" takes another jazz-road entirely, heading for a kind of middle ground; strong and melodic, unburdened by the weight of weed-smoke, un-tempted by the noodling of free avant-gardism. Then there's the cosmic phunk of "Space Man", and the slathering sentimentality of "Her", which show that Jon is concerned with space, both inner and outer.

More economic than RJD2, less experimental than Prefuse 73, Jon has his own lucid, light-heavy sound that, regardless of the glut of beatz in the world today, occupies a special ­and necessary place.

May 15th, precisely one year after the successful Escape, the E.P. album together with Crookram, Bankrupt Recordings is proud to release Sagesse’s instrumental solo album titled Cool Tempo.
Sagesse shifted his creativity for this project. Where on “Escape” he did the vocals and musical production together with Crookram, he now temporarily left his microphone alone to create a full instrumental album. With the help of Crookram as engineer Sagesse managed to create a journey through a wide variety of samples and different drum patterns in an attempt to discover the essence and boundaries of contemporary Hip Hop music.

Comment parler d'un bonhomme au génie reconnu, qui se trouve au carrefour de nombreuses influences et qui surtout trouve toujours le ton juste pour amener son auditoire à l'étonnement ?
C'est justement avec des phrases un peu conne comme celle-ci, que j'y arriverai. Jneiro Jarel (re)connu parfois aussi comme l'énigmatique Doctor Who Dat ?, dans le 'biz' depuis ses 14 ans laisse sa première trace commerciale en 2005 avec l'énormissime "Three piece puzzle". Et quelle trace !!! Sorte d'HipHop abstract, mélangé à la musique brésilienne (Bossa ou Samba d'ailleurs, d'où peut-être l'origine de son pseudo ?), de l'Éléctro Lounge, du sucre glace, du Rock et bien sûr du Rhythm' n' Blues et de la Soul. Un résultat tout à fait réussi qui a ouvert la voie ensuite à pas mal d'autres jeunes entrepreneurs dont l'un de plus formidables exemple est Flying Lotus (Bleu).
Album génial donc, rythmé de bout en bout par Jarel et son double, aidé tous deux par Roque Wun. À l'époque où j'ai acheté, je suis littéralement resté scotché sur "Doinis": ce son met une préssion incroyable, je trouve. "Lock down" et "Do ya thang" sont tout aussi saignants, mais vous trouverez aux quatre coins de l'album de merveilleuses prods.
Il n'est depuis pas resté inactif, car on lui doit entre autre le sublime projet "The Shape of broad minds" et "Beat journey" que je vous encourage à explorer.

Mon premier infeste les bas fonds; mon second pénètre dans la peau; mon tout est l'un des albums références du trip hop. "Radar", premier album d'Earthling, grand groupe méconnu, est sorti en 1995 dans la foulée de "Maxinquaye" (Tricky, 1995 également) et de "Dummy" (Portishead, 1994).

10 ans plus tard, on cherche à comprendre pourquoi Earthling n'a pas rencontré un vaste public tandis que Massive Attack, Portishead et Tricky remportaient la mise. La réussite est une alchimie (une personnalité, un chanteur, du talent, un bon timing, une maison de disques, de la chance). Il a manqué à Earthling les deux derniers paramètres. Lâché par sa maison de disques, le groupe défunt ne dût qu'à l'opiniâtreté de Discograph la sortie de son second opus, l'excellent "Humandust" en 2004.

Mars 2005, le trip-hoppeur écoute avec ferveur "Radar". Des rides crevassent certains morceaux (les cuts de Geoff Barrow de Portishead sentent la naphtaline), mais "Radar" écrase encore la production actuelle de sa grandeur. Plus extraordinaire, le premier album d'Earthling est à la fois un album phare du trip-hop et sa transgression.

Construit comme un toboggan , "Radar" démarre pieds au plancher avec des titres lance-rockets : "1st Transmission", "Anada's Theme" et surtout "Nefisa" que l'on classera haut la main parmi les 10 meilleurs titres du trip hop... L'album prend ensuite des chemins de traverse étonnants en flirtant avec la soul, voire le gospel. Après plusieurs écoutes , on reste intrigué par les choeurs New Orleans et les cuivres gorgés de soleil de "Echo on my Mind". A partir de "Infinite M", Lou Reedien en diable, Earthling aligne la plus belle brochette de titres de l'histoire du trip-hop : "Planete of the Apes" prend aux tripes, "By means of beams" envoie au ciel. "Freak, freak" mordille et "I could just die" touche au coeur.

Car Earthling, par sa noirceur et son extravagance, est avant tout un groupe charnel, charnu et tribal, qui bouleverse, divertit et inquiéte.
