Liam Farrell est une espèce d'homme de l'ombre omnipotent dans le paysage musical français. Hip-hop, electro, jazz ou chanson, ses compétences s'exercent dans des domaines tellement éloignés qu'il devient difficile d'en isoler la signature. A tel point qu'à l'heure de parler de ce talentueux batteur et producteur, il est plutôt question de listes et de palmarès que de propos esthétiques. Au grand réconfort des non-initiés, on n'y résistera pas. Ecoutez plutôt : Après avoir tenu les baguettes pour Rita Mistousko, les Wampas  ou FFF, Doctor L s'est brillament illustré à la production pour Assassin, Rodolphe Burger, Bumcello, Bashung ou encore Tony Allen, avec qui il a monté le projet afrobeat Psycho on da Bus. Cela a certes de quoi impressionner, mais comme dirait l'autre, la vérité est "higher", dans l'identité musicale même de cet artiste-savant perfectionniste.

Ce nouvel album solo en est l'illustration parfaite. Comme le titre vous l'aura déjà indiqué, tous les morceaux ici présents sont des ébauches oubliées sur un disque dur, et provenant donc d'époques, de collaborations ou de projets différents. On trouve par exemple des chutes des disques de Kactus Hunters ou Rare Moods, aux côtés des travaux individuels du docteur. Tout ce matériel a donc été repris, remixé et réagencé dans un mix de 70 minutes. Le tour de force résidant dans le pari, réussi, de faire sonner ce rapiéçage comme un ensemble cohérent. Et donc de dégager, de mettre en lumière, la marque de fabrique, le groove si particulier de Doctor L. Un son dense et clair aux séquences alambiquées. Des textures et un grain originaux que l'on peine à décrire. Une espèce de moiteur sèche, en quelque sorte, comme les émanations du bitume chauffé à blanc par le soleil estival (écoutez donc Kind of Dry, qui porte fort bien son nom). Craquements divers, voix soul vocodées, rhodes ou guitares distordus et flûtes fugitives constituent le principal de l'arsenal mélodique, évoluant au fil de décors downtempo.

Une musique pas forcément évidente à assimiler de prime abord, de par sa richesse et sa relative complexité. Mais pour peu qu'on s'y engouffre, le voyage en vaut la peine. Sans se détacher du reste de sa discographie, en terme de qualité, Forgotten Tracks from the Hard Drive constitue une excellente porte d'entrée à l'univers de Doctor L, et saura tout autant séduire ses adeptes, déjà acquis à sa cause.

There aren't enough natural resources on planet Earth to keep us going. And there are insufficient amounts of love, hospitality or, indeed, humane warmth. That's all a given. But what is not lacking in any way, shape or form on our madly spinning orb, is - instrumental hip hop.

Not that this bothers Fat Jon. Beat creator for Cincinnati based hip hop outfit Five Deez crew and sometime collaborator with German dubmeister Pole, Jon has carved a nice little side niche for himself as a purveyor of, yup, the genre that has expanded exponentially ever since DJ Shadow showed the world how complete an instrument a sampler could be in the right hands.

Do we really need more?

Jon showed us back in 2002, on his album Wave Motion, that an ostensibly vocal-less album could speak volumes. He showed us how basslines could moil and mutter seductively, how jazz riffs could burble magnificently, and how cleverly placed samples and skilful arrangements could trick us into thinking these instrumentals were actually songs.

Lightweight Heavy does the same again, conjuring up a certain sound ­summed up neatly in the title ­that balances butch, punchy riddims with summery vibes and simple structures that seem multi-dimensional.

The first single, "Everywhere" is a case in point. A tripping, folkish vocalstitched to a coruscating harmony produces an endlessly pleasant bump that has simplicity written all over it, but is still hopelessly infectious.

Opening gambit from the album, "Talk To Me", is pure pillow-talk; breathy vocal samples rising up from a deceptively brisk beat ride a classical piano riff that pushes your thoughts towards an abstract horizon.

Trademark dubby basslines are a big reason for Jon's allure. "Torn Again" and "Mystery Soul" tug directly at the knees, compensating for the overall lack in rhythm shifts and chord changes.

"Synopsis" takes another jazz-road entirely, heading for a kind of middle ground; strong and melodic, unburdened by the weight of weed-smoke, un-tempted by the noodling of free avant-gardism. Then there's the cosmic phunk of "Space Man", and the slathering sentimentality of "Her", which show that Jon is concerned with space, both inner and outer.

More economic than RJD2, less experimental than Prefuse 73, Jon has his own lucid, light-heavy sound that, regardless of the glut of beatz in the world today, occupies a special ­and necessary place.

May 15th, precisely one year after the successful Escape, the E.P. album together with Crookram, Bankrupt Recordings is proud to release Sagesse’s instrumental solo album titled Cool Tempo.
Sagesse shifted his creativity for this project. Where on “Escape” he did the vocals and musical production together with Crookram, he now temporarily left his microphone alone to create a full instrumental album. With the help of Crookram as engineer Sagesse managed to create a journey through a wide variety of samples and different drum patterns in an attempt to discover the essence and boundaries of contemporary Hip Hop music.
